Obituary for Frank Minium Wilson, The Cumberland News February 24, 1950
Dr. Frank Minium Wilson, 59, of 654 Washington Street, prominent local surgeon, died yesterday afternoon in Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness.
Dr. Wilson was admitted to the hospital October 24, 1949. Later he was transferred to Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, for an operation. Except for a short period at his residence during the Christmas holidays, he had been a patient at Memorial Hospital since his return from Baltimore.
A well-known surgeon in Cumberland, Dr. Wilson was born here November 7, 1890, a son of the late Dr. J. Jones Wilson and Mrs. Marie Josephine McCormick Wilson. His father was a prominent Western Maryland physician.
He attended Allegany County Academy here and was graduated from West Virginia University. He attended the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, for one year and was graduated from the Medical School of the University of Maryland in 1914.
Dr. Wilson held for one year a clinical assistantship at University Hospital, Baltimore, and spent another year under Dr. George Washington Crile, world renowned surgeon at St. Alexis Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio.
On June 16, 1917, Dr. Wilson entered the Army as a first lieutenant. He served for 22 months, 13 of which were overseas with the 307th Infantry and 306th Ambulance Corps of the 77th Division. Wounded on the front line, he saw action in the Lorraine sector; Vesle sector defensive, Oise-Aisne offensive, and the Meuse-Argonne offensive. He was promoted to captain February 17, 1917.
Leaving France May 6, 1919, he received his discharge May 20,1919, and resumed practice here. On October 23, 1946, he became the first local physician to become a Fellow in the United States Chapter, International College of Surgeons. Only 250 American physicians were selected for the honor that year.
Dr. Wilson had been a member of the American College of Surgeons since 1936 and was active in his profession and in local civic affairs. In 1941 he served as general campaign chairman of the Cumberland Community Chest drive.
He was the founder of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. He had been invited this year to present a paper before the International College of Physicians and Surgeons in Geneva, Switzerland, but declined because of ill health.
During his practice here, Dr. Wilson served on the staffs of the Western Maryland, Allegany and Memorial Hospitals, the latter since 1928. He was a surgeon for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Since 1933, he had performed 4,407 surgical procedures at Memorial Hospital alone. Prior to 1933 he was associated with Dr. Arthur H. Hawkins.
He also had been a member of the old Cumberland Academy of Medicine; Allegany-Garrett Medical Society; American Medical Society, of which he was a past president; Medical-Chirurgical Society of Maryland and the old Tri-State Medical Society.
Dr. Wilson was one of the founders of the Cumberland Police Boys Club and belonged to First Presbyterian Church, Fort Cumberland Post No. 13, American Legion; Cumberland Lodge No. 63, B.P.O. Elks; Cumberland Lodge No. 271, L.O.O. Moose; Cumberland Country Club and was a charter member of Cumberland Kiwanis Club.
A 32nd Degree Mason, he was a member of Fort Cumberland Lodge No. 211, A.F. and A.M., the Shrine, the Jesters, and all other Masonic organizations. He was also first commodore of the Deep Creek Lake Yacht Club. Among his civic duties was that of treasurer of the Allegany County League for Crippled Children.
His cottage in Garrett County was a gathering place annually for business and professional men, and the Duke Memorial Bible Class met there yearly. In September 1946, the noted scientist, Dr. Albert Einstein, was entertained there as Dr. Wilson’s guest for two weeks.
Among Dr. Wilson’s survivors are his widow, Mrs. Fannie Curtis Roberts Wilson, daughter of the late W. Milnor and Fannie Millholland Roberts. He and Miss Roberts were married June 16, 1920, in Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Obituary for Wilton H. Syckes, Azcentral.com
Syckes, Wilton H. Sr., 88, died peacefully in his sleep on March 28. He was adored and respected by all who know him, most especially his family. Wilt is survived by his wife, Eleanor Bradford, daughter Cornelia (Nini) Syckes Chorpenning, her husband Patrick, Sr., son Wilton H. Syckes Jr., wife, Eunice, six grandchildren, and thirteen greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Brad and his brother, Lu Syckes. Born in Cumberland, Maryland, son of Dr. and Mrs. Silas Lua Syckes, Wilton was a child violin prodigy from the age of 4, and at 16 he was a violin soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra, Washington, D.C. He continued with violin and later added baritone horn to his repertoire.
He enlisted in the US Navy, serving aboard the USS ENTERPRISE (CV6) during WWII. Following the war Wilton was selected to be a member of the famed United States Navy Band, Washington, D.C. and was Concertmaster of the Navy Symphony.
After military service Wilton returned to his hometown, Cumberland, married his wife, started his family, and opened Syckes Music Store in the 1950s. During this time, he also taught music, played first violin in the Cumberland Symphony Orchestra and for a time was symphony conductor. In 1959, he took to the road selling pianos, traveling during the week, home weekends. He revived the National Piano Traveler's Association (NPTA), which remained dear to his heart and was passionate about "the little guy” as he considered himself, out there on the road day after day. NPTA was a passion to Wilt and without him, there wouldn't be an association today. Wilton moved his family to Rockport, Massachusetts in 1967, continued his traveling life and became involved with The Rockport American Legion and the Legion Band, which he conducted in the late 60s into the 70s. This was a very special time in his life. In 1977, he moved to Phoenix, Az., began his wholesale piano business, Syckes Piano Imports, played in bands: Sun City Ramblers, Sun City Brass, and Tommy Thompson band. Wilt was in his 80s when he finally retired. We miss him greatly but can surely hear him playing "I’ll Be Seeing You" in God's Heavenly Band. We'll be seeing you, "Pop".
In lieu of flowers. donations may be made in his name to: Advent Episcopal Church, 13150 Spanish Garden Dr., Sun City West, AZ. 85375, or to NPTA Foundation, Dawn DeMars, Treasurer, PO Box 1441, Agora Hills, Ca. 91376.
